The pine processionary is a highly infesting moth that can cause damage not only to the plant where it nests, but also to people and pets.
Larvae, despite their very small size, have strong jaws and are able to defoliate entire pine branches, causing very serious damage to the plant.
The removal of the processionary moth begins right from the disinfestation of the nests which must take place in winter.
There is even a Ministerial Decree in Italy that defines the ways to get rid of this annoying animal.
Dogs and cats are particularly exposed to the danger of the processionary moth because, smelling the ground, they could inadvertently inhale the stinging hairs.
You should pay attention to your pets especially in spring. In fact the small larvae, in this period, leave the host plant where they have passed the cold winter period.
Then they head in single file to a point where they can burrow and then hatch into butterflies in the summer.
Contact with the digestive or respiratory system of the pet could be fatal.
If your pets exhibit any of the following symptoms, you should contact your veterinarian immediately:
- excessive salivation;
- vomiting or diarrhea;
- increase in body temperature.
